McLuhan and Media Future

A lot of conversations about media talk about "what if". I am a strong believer media and social media were unavoidable creations and do not think things could've been different. History shows media being used in different ways, we have just gotten ourselves into the era of technological developments. It would be unfortunate and wrong if we didn't use that for communicating news, entertainment, communication, and much more. It has become 'the new normal'. Young people grew up with technology, we do not know what it was like before. This frankly scares me knowing my children will raise an eyebrow at me if I told them what we had to work with in school, once their new technological ways show up. I do believe technological media creates a big impact in peoples lives.

I feel like people have become lazier in general communication. Communication with another friend or stranger is just a single short message away. Face-to-face conversations are not a preference for many people anymore. It is convenient indeed, but we don't notice our lack of physical human contact, because it has become normal. Normal for a group of people to do it, so the next group does it because otherwise, they cannot communicate with group one since they're using a different media now. Parents or grandparents are still trying to catch up with these technologies to the point it has become a very enclosed communication method for each generation. As cross generations do not communicate over the same online digital platform as the generation itself communicate in.

It's also important to consider the impact of media on people's lives. A very important example I've been thinking about in my personal life, and for all Americans. America is very active in Basketball, Baseball, and American Football. Soccer is the main sport everywhere else in the world, it made me wonder why this is not the case in America. Well, all three main sports in America have tons and tons of breaks and points or goals. Commercial breaks intervene these games at points or goals or at set breaks. The media streams more of these games because the commercial media market in America is much bigger than anywhere else in the world (eg. Super Bowl). This influenced the media to stream more of those games, and less of soccer, due to their single break. This has influenced potential soccer sports fans to enjoy something else. And all of this is just Sports, imagine what media does and can do with everything else in your life.
